Unafraid: Reducing HIV Stigma - Coming Out

  • 202 Chavez Center (map)

UNAFRAID aims to combat the societal stigma that still surrounds HIV, rather than addressing the topic from a solely medical standpoint. This comes from the the presence of resources catered toward HIV- individuals, such as PrEP/PEP advocacy, but a lack of centering the experiences and narratives of those who are HIV+. The goal of these workshops is to provide a safe environment for HIV+ people to express themselves, reduce internalized stigma, and gain resources and knowledge not other available in HIV- centered advocacy and education. Moreover, for those who are HIV-, these workshops are an opportunity to combat stigma.

“Coming out” is often associated with those in the LGBTQ+ community to describe the process of disclosing their identity/identities to others. In the same way that this process might be extremely difficult, introduce new struggles, or be liberating for some LGBTQ+ individuals, the process of disclosing one’s status can also be described as “coming out.”
